A Rising Star from Visakhapatnam Shining on Global Chess Stage

Visakhapatnam / Dubai, June 2025
In a proud moment for the Indian chess community, Yasaswi Krishna Bommi, a 14-year-old chess prodigy from Visakhapatnam, has officially earned the prestigious title of Women Candidate Master (WCM) in June 2025, after crossing an ELO rating of 2004. Her achievement marks a significant milestone in her journey that began just six years ago.

Born and raised in Dubai, Yasaswi has been balancing her academic life and chess pursuits with remarkable dedication. A Grade 9 student, she found her passion for the game in 2019 during a vacation to Visakhapatnam, where she began her training under the guidance of coach Mr. Lokeswar Rao Moogi. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, her learning never stopped, thanks to regular online sessions. She made her international debut in November 2021 in Armenia, where she earned her initial FIDE rating.

Yasaswi’s journey reflects a story of commitment, perseverance, and continuous self-improvement. Over the past two years, she has shown phenomenal growth under the mentorship of Mr. Niranjan Mocharla, whose student-focused approach—tailoring training to Yasaswi's unique style and strengths—has propelled her to consistent success in international and national arenas. Her family credits both coaches for their invaluable support, with special thanks to Mr. Lokesh sir, who first introduced her to the sport.

Yasaswi's chess resume is impressive and steadily growing. Some of her notable achievements include:

1st Place – 8th Chess Lab Classic Series Challenge (U-1600), November 2023

Best Woman Player – 5th Fujairah Endurance Chess Championship, January 2024
