Empowering Young Lives Along the Banks of Godavari: Chess Initiative Begins at Sri Gowtami Jeeva Karunya Sangham, Rajahmundry
Rajahmundry, East Godavari – In a heartfelt gesture that echoes the spirit of International Chess Day and the noble ideals of social transformation through sports, the East Godavari District Chess Association, inspired by a clarion call from Sri A. Suresh Garu, President of Andhra Chess Association, has launched a transformative chess outreach program at Sri Gowtami Jeeva Karunya Sangham, a revered home for orphans and underprivileged students.
This cherished institution, nestled on the serene banks of the sacred River Godavari, has long been a sanctuary for destitute and abandoned children, offering them not only shelter and food but also the priceless gift of education and care. With this new initiative, chess is now poised to become a powerful catalyst in shaping their futures.
The program was officially inaugurated by the stalwarts of East Godavari District Chess Association —
Sri G.V. Kumar, International Arbiter and Association Secretary;
Sri Y. Kalyan Kumar, FIDE Instructor and Vice President;
Sri G. Kartik Gopal, Senior National Arbiter; and
Smt. G.V.N. Lakshmi, renowned Chess Coach.
They were joined by officials from the Sangham, including Sri P. Vijay, who warmly welcomed the initiative. Chess boards and specially curated learning material were distributed to the children, followed by the announcement of a long-term, free chess coaching camp to be held regularly at the premises. This endeavor is part of the statewide “Chess for Everyone- one move can chage a life ” campaign, envisioned and led by ACA President Sri A. Suresh Garu, in celebration of International Chess Day.
A Vision Rooted in Social Change
Sri G.V. Kumar, one of Andhra Pradesh’s most senior International Arbiters, personally identified Sri Gowtami Jeeva Karunya Sangham as an ideal partner for this initiative. Speaking on the occasion, he stated:
“This Sangham is doing divine service. These children are not just being cared for — they are being uplifted. Introducing chess here will strengthen their minds, boost their confidence, and open doors they never imagined.”
In an inspiring gesture of commitment, Sri Y. Kalyan Kumar, despite his demanding professional schedule, volunteered to personally conduct regular training sessions. His passion is driven by the belief that even one talented child, if guided right, could blossom into a rated chess player and eventually a beacon of inspiration for others.
A River, A Cause, A New Chapter
The symbolic importance of launching this initiative beside River Godavari — the lifeline of Andhra Pradesh — adds a poetic layer to the story. Just as the Godavari sustains life across its banks, this chess initiative aims to nurture and guide young, underserved minds towards a brighter, empowered future.
Though Sri P. Tarakeswara Rao, Executive Officer of the Sangham, could not attend the programme personally, his steadfast support and blessings have been instrumental in facilitating this meaningful collaboration. His leadership continues to strengthen the Sangham’s mission of reforming and educating the underprivileged with dignity and purpose.
This initiative is yet another proud chapter in ACA’s broader vision under the leadership of Sri A. Suresh Garu, whose passion for expanding chess into remote and under-served communities is reshaping the narrative of what the sport can achieve.
