Chess Touches Lives at Santha Kalyana Anuraga Nilayam, Srikakulam

As part of the International Chess Day celebrations on July 20, the Chess Association of Srikakulam District conducted an inspiring chess outreach program at Santha Kalyana Anuraga Nilayam, a children’s home located in Srikakulam town. This noble initiative was undertaken as a part of the “One Move Can Change a Life” campaign initiated by the Andhra Chess Association under the dynamic leadership of Sri A. Suresh, President, Andhra Chess Association.
About the Home
Santha Kalyana Anuraga Nilayam is a care home run by the Indian Red Cross Society, Srikakulam District Branch, offering shelter, support, and education to orphaned and underprivileged children. The home has become a beacon of compassion in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh. It is managed under the committed leadership of Sri Jagan Mohan Rao garu, Chairman of Red Cross Society, Srikakulam District, and Vice Chairman of the State Red Cross Society. His visionary social service has enabled the home to reach hundreds of children with dignity and hope.
Chess for a Brighter Tomorrow
The program was spearheaded by Sri S. Bheemarao, Former Secretary of Andhra Chess Association, FIDE Arbiter, and member of the Chess-in-Schools (CIS) Committee of AICF. A tireless promoter of grassroots chess, Sri Bheemarao personally interacted with the children, demonstrating how chess can improve thinking, discipline, and life skills.
He was joined by Sri B. Kishore, President of the Chess Association of Srikakulam District, Sri J. Ramesh, Secretary, and other senior office bearers of the association Sri YVS Kumar, Sri Vasanta Rao, Mr Abhinav & Mr Jairaj who lent wholehearted support in making the program meaningful and impactful.
The Day’s Highlights
Introduction to Chess: Children at the home were introduced to the basics of chess through simple, engaging lessons.
Chess Boards & Books Distributed: As part of the President’s mission, chess boards and beginner-friendly learning books were donated to the home.
Weekly Coaching Commitment: Sri Bheemarao assured that regular weekly coaching sessions will continue at the home and that deserving children will receive further tournament exposure and professional mentorship.
In an emotional address, Sri Bheemarao said:
“Chess doesn’t just build champions—it builds character. Every move teaches a lesson. These young minds are full of promise, and we are here to support and shape that promise into success.”

This event marks another significant step by the Chess Association of Srikakulam District toward making chess a tool of transformation in society. Their active role in spreading chess culture—guided by the larger vision of the Andhra Chess Association—continues to empower children from every background.
