Vijayawada: In a powerful convergence of sport and social responsibility, the SRR FIDE Rating Chess Tournament held at Scotspine International School witnessed an extraordinary moment of collective commitment, as nearly 1,500 chess players and parents took a solemn anti-drug pledge, responding to the call of Ake Ravi Krishna, Inspector General of Police, EAGLE (Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement), Government of Andhra Pradesh.

Addressing the gathering, Sri Ravi Krishna delivered a deeply impactful message, emphasizing that the fight against drugs must begin at the grassroots and at a tender age. He underscored that awareness, early education, and community vigilance are the most effective tools in preventing substance abuse. “Prevention is always more powerful than enforcement,” he remarked, urging parents and young minds alike to remain alert and responsible.

In a clear call to action, he appealed to the public to actively participate in safeguarding society by reporting any suspicious drug-related activities. He highlighted the importance of the 24x7 anti-drug helpline (1972), encouraging citizens to use it without hesitation. His address resonated strongly with the audience, transforming the tournament venue into a platform of social awakening.

The pledge ceremony was conducted with remarkable discipline and unity, as players—ranging from young beginners to seasoned competitors—stood alongside their parents, collectively affirming their commitment to a drug-free Andhra Pradesh. The atmosphere reflected not just enthusiasm for chess, but a shared sense of civic duty.

The initiative also demonstrated the growing role of sports platforms in driving meaningful social change. Recognizing the vast reach of the chess community, Sri Ravi Krishna noted that thousands of young players across the state can become ambassadors of awareness, carrying the message into schools, homes, and communities.

The event was graced by several distinguished dignitaries, including K V V Sarma, Chairman; A Suresh, President of Andhra Chess Association; N M Phani Kumar; and Smt. Prathima Chalasani, Principal of Scotspine International School, along with other eminent personalities.

Speaking on the occasion, the organizers expressed their gratitude to the EAGLE Department for integrating such a crucial social initiative into a premier sporting event. They reiterated their commitment to supporting awareness programs that contribute to the well-being of young minds.

The SRR FIDE Rating Chess Tournament thus transcended the boundaries of competition, emerging as a beacon of responsible citizenship, where strategy on the chessboard was matched by a collective resolve to protect society from the menace of drugs.
