The Inspiring Journey of Ananya: A Rising Chess Prodigy

In the quiet town of  Rajahmundry  lives Ananya, a bright and talented 9-year-old chess prodigy whose journey to success is both inspiring and heart-wrenching. Her story is one of resilience, dedication, and the unwavering determination of a mother to fulfill her late husband’s dream of making their daughter a professional chess player.

The Beginning of a Dream

Ananya’s journey in chess began in 2020 when her father, Chinta Satyanarayana, a passionate chess enthusiast and government school teacher, introduced her to the game. Her aptitude for the sport was evident within just 15 days of coaching. However, tragedy struck when Ananya contracted COVID-19, and shortly after her recovery, her father passed away suddenly. This devastating loss left her mother, Kalyani, grappling with grief and the responsibility of raising two young children.

Despite the challenges, Kalyani decided to carry forward her husband’s dream. In 2023, she took on the mantle of supporting Ananya’s chess aspirations. With the help of Mr. Hema Chandra Mouli, a young certified coach, FIDE Arbiter, and National Instructor, Ananya began formal training. The family’s determination shone through as Kalyani, a former private college lecturer, left her job to devote herself entirely to her daughter’s career, managing on a modest government pension.

Rising Against the Odds

Ananya’s talent quickly became evident as she excelled in district-level tournaments and progressed to state-level competitions. Despite financial constraints, she won numerous age-group open competitions and secured second place in the U9 Girls’ State Championship in Vizianagaram in 2024. This achievement was a significant milestone, earning her a normal entry into the U9 National Girls’ Championship.

At the Nationals, Ananya faced some of the best players in her category, including 11 rated opponents. Her performance was nothing short of remarkable. With a performance rating of 1744, she defeated six players rated above 1500, drew against two, and lost matches  to  players rated 1800 & 1500. Her victory against a 1636-rated player showcased her immense potential and fighting spirit. Despite narrowly missing a spot in the International Cadets Tournament, her performance was a testament to her innate talent and skill.

The Struggles Behind the Success

The road to success has not been easy for Ananya and her family. Financial difficulties have severely limited her participation in FIDE-rated tournaments. To date, she has only played three such tournaments in nearby locations—Bhimavaram, Vijayawada, and Vizag. Without regular exposure to these events, Ananya has been unable to obtain an international rating, a crucial step for advancing her career.

Her mother’s sacrifices are profound. From traveling with Ananya to state-level events to managing expenses for her son’s budding chess career, Kalyani has shouldered immense responsibility. Playing in the U9 Nationals alone cost the family over ₹50,000, covering lodging, boarding, travel, and coaching expenses. While Ananya’s selection as a normal entry player ensured free accommodation for her, her mother and coach’s expenses added to the financial strain.

Ananya’s natural talent, obedience, and cool temperament, combined with her mother’s unwavering determination, make her a promising star for Andhra Pradesh and India. However, without financial support, her journey may stall. To reach her full potential, Ananya needs sponsorship for at least 4-5 major events each calendar year. These tournaments will provide her with the exposure and experience necessary to compete at the international level.

Kalyani’s plea is heartfelt: “We have no financial background to even play higher-age group state tournaments. Despite being selected as a normal entry, we struggle to cover additional expenses. We hope that some sports-loving entity will adopt Ananya and support her professional career in chess.”

The Future of Indian Chess

Ananya’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the sacrifices of a loving parent. Her story is not just about individual success but a call to action for sports enthusiasts and sponsors to come forward and nurture young talent. With the right support, Ananya can become a shining star on the national and international chess stage, inspiring countless others to dream big.
